The first round matches, as usual for a Masters 1000 tourney, look to be tight affairs. Based on our predicted match odds and current rankings we highlight some of what might be the most nail-biting matches of the first leg of the tournament (in bold).

Day 1 (03/09)

Winning Player (rank) Losing Player (rank) W-L %
Vasek Pospisil (129) Yen Hsun Lu (65) 2-0 60%
Francis Tiafoe (86) Dusan Lajovic (106) 0-0 54%
Reilly Opelka (174) Peter Gojowczyk (148) 0-0 61%

Viktor Troicki (39) Alexandr Dolgopolov (64) 2-0 53%
Yoshihito Nishioka (70) Elias Ymer (158) 0-0 73%
Bernard Tomic (42) Bjorn Fratangelo (112) 0-0 68%
Nikoloz Basilashvili (55) Darian King (131) 0-0 82%
Jordan Thompson (76) Dmitry Tursunov (554) 0-0 75%
Diego Sebastian Schwartzman (44) Joao Sousa (37) 0-0 54%
Jeremy Chardy (80) Radu Albot (87) 0-0 61%
Viktor Troicki (39) def. Alexandr Dolgopolov (64)(53%)

Anything can happen when Dolgopolov plays, so it’s no surprise our model has this as an extremely tight match despite Troicki 2-0 head to head record.

Diego Sebastian Schwartzman (44) def. Joao Sousa (37) (54%)

These two players are known for their relentlessly solid clay court game, yet have never met previously. Dieguito Schwartzman’s good run of form in the clay court swing may give him the edge according to our model, but expect a grind-fest!

Day 2 (03/10)

Winning Player (rank) Losing Player (rank) W-L %
Taylor Harry Fritz (136) Benoit Paire (40) 0-0 57%
Nicolas Mahut (54) Malek Jaziri (53) 0-0 57%
Borna Coric (59) Henri Laaksonen (123) 0-0 86%
Daniil Medvedev (58) Mikhail Youzhny (84) 0-0 51%
Santiago Giraldo (103) Jan Lennard Struff (63) 0-0 51%
Donald Young (60) Stefan Kozlov (116) 1-0 73%
Jiri Vesely (56) Renzo Olivo (88) 0-1 76%
Daniel Evans (41) Dustin Brown (82) 1-0 66%
Guillermo Garcia Lopez (89) Guido Pella (145) 1-1 54%
Pierre Hugues Herbert (74) Thomaz Bellucci (71) 0-0 51%
Kevin Anderson (79) Federico Gaio (159) 0-0 85%
Dudi Sela (78) Stephane Robert (81) 0-0 69%
Marius Copil (111) Horacio Zeballos (73) 0-0 65%
Julien Benneteau (117) Facundo Bagnis (83) 0-1 85%
Federico Delbonis (49) Andrey Kuznetsov (62) 2-0 53%
Kyle Edmund (46) Gastao Elias (95) 0-0 69%

Taylor Harry Fritz (136) def. Benoit Paire (40) (57%)

This is a pretty bold call based on current ranking, but the up-and-coming American Taylor Fritz has built up a nice head of steam coming into this year’s Indian Wells. Paire has been wavering recently too, but we’ll see what tricks he has up his sleeve…

Daniil Medvedev (58) def. Mikhail Youzhny (84) (51%)

This is a very interesting match up between two generations of Russian players, the young #NextGen hopeful Medvedev and the established veteran Youzhny. Expect an extremely tough mental battle in this one!!
